I have always believed ZDNet to be an apologist site for Microsoft and this is yet-another-so-called-journalistic pack of lies by ZDNet. Now, what part of the grid compute utility you did not like.
Its a great product. You have a complicated program which takes a while to run, you pay Sun a few bucks, use their grid, get your job done. No contracts, no hidden fees. Just use your credit card. I have friends who goto grad school and who would love this kind of infrastructure so they don't have to maintain their own grids for powerful processing needs e.g. one of my friends is working on data clustering apps and would love something like this.
Then you go on to further bash this project by saying that it will take hours to get an account.
Even if it takes hours to get an account, its OK as there is no equivalent product on the market.
Secondly, in his blog, Jonathan did say that the delay was due to security reasons. Now, did you miss that or were you hoping that noone would notice.
Now this is a pretty exciting technology. In the sense that for the first time ever, the common man can use a super computer. Most people don't need to, but if someone does, they can without going the traditional route of building your own or leasing it from someone with all the contracts and lock-in.
Apart from that, ever heard of mashups. Google it. If this thing works out, and I am hoping that it does, we, and by we, I mean common developers would have access to so many resources, not only hardware, but also things like Flickr, Amazon, Yahoo Maps etc. API's so we could build custom apps from those too.
