$1/cpu-hour is a nice round number, but let's do the math.

a dual-opteron machine costs maybe $2k and let's depreciate it to zero over 3 years. $1.83/day. that's not TCO, of course. let's assume that human costs double the price ($3.65/day). don't forget power, but that only amounts to $.6/day (250W).

so for around $4/day, you get a dedicated dual-opteron, versus renting access from sun for $48/day. no real mystery why sun is underwhelmed with customers...
