AMD vs Intel = Good!
This article shows two things:

1) The market really is dominated by theories and rumors. People who work in the market stand to make a lot more when things are shaking up, so any rumor or announcement that causes a stock to slip or slide is great for them. The problem is that we can't simply ignore these rumors just because we don't like what they do to the market. Their effect is real. The rumors are the market.

2) Price does matter. Some people on this board have claimed that AMD will not be affected by the price wars because of technology. AMD is in existence because of price wars. Intel chips used to kick butt over AMD chips, and yet, here they are today.

The technology advantage will change hands many many times in one product line or the other. AMD does not have a monopoly on good engineers and neither does Intel.

The reason AMD has the tech advantage today is because Intel has wasted so much time over the past six years with "NetBurst" microarchitecture. While Intel was putting all their eggs in the "NetBurst" basket, time and technology passed them by, a situation that AMD smartly took advantage of.

But don't make the mistake of thinking that what AMD is doing now will still be the best thing a few years from now. One simple change on the AMD chips is giving them the advantage, and it is something that Intel could replicate in a single chip generation.

Also, Intel is already producing chips that outpace the current AMD lot by 20% (Read - http://blogs.zdnet.com/Ou/index.php?p=170&tag=nl.e589). Intel also has the technological capability to produce chips that are twice to four times as intricate as the best AMD fab that isn't even complete yet.

The only thing Intel needs to be worried about is placing themselves in a position of being considered the "bargain chip maker", which I suspect they are too experienced to let happen.

What I love best about this whole situation is the benefit to us, the consumer. Intel and AMD may not be good for each other, but having both has been great for computers and the consumer.
