"Still this article gets me just a little confused as to why anyone really needs 64-bit chip right now, unless it's about bragging rights."

Change has to start somewhere. If everyone kept saying who needs 64bit, it would never happen. That is why AMD developed a 64bit chip that is 32bit compatible (Intel Followed). Kind of like what was done when 32bit/16bit compatible chips of the past. That way people can run todays software in 32bit and as 64bit software surfaces they can run that too. Its not about bragging rights as you say. Its about evolution of technology. Microsofts new operating system (Vista) will be 64bit compatible and I think their new version of Office will be 64bit as well, but I am not sure. I think my Microsoft Rep mentioned that to me.
