Slight correction

First off, AMD was originally contracted by Intel in the EARLY days (80286 era) to make chips. Intel, back in the day, didn't quite have the ability to make enough volume to meet the demand at the time.

AMD wasn't contracted by Intel. They were contracted by IBM as a "second source". IBM always insisted on 2 sources for all components to guard against shortages and such. IBM twisted Intel's arm into a cross license agreement between the two. Intel tried unsuccesfully to wiggle out of this after IBM lost it's hold on the PC.

AMD also had a 386 that ran at 40mhz. It was the basis for the first Intel/AMD lawsuit. Intel sued on the grounds that AMD reversed engineered their chip and AMD counter-sued on the basis that Intel sold them a faulty chip design with at least one major flaw in it's microcode. Forcing AMD to spend large sums of money to fix. AMD won. In my humble opinion, AMD has always had the better engineers. Intel has always had the better PR/marketing people.

Not trying to be a smartass here. I do not portend to know it all. (unless you ask one of the ex-wives) If you see any errors or add-ons, by all means point them out.
