WiFi is Terestrial - think Satellite
The man that brought us AT&T Cellular is about to bring us the new SkyTell. This is a Satellite based system that will allow your "cell" phone to operate any place on earth, or in the sky. It is the end of WiFi as serous communication technology. Not that WIFi ever was that given the security issues. A little background:

In Seattle, we had to go to GSM - global system mobile - owing to cruise ships. Folks from Europe would assume that the big city next to Microsoft would have the latest communication techology. The truth was that a different technology for phones (a potentially better technology) was favored and there were preasures not to support EU standards. The perception of the cruise ship passengers with their cell phones which operated basically everywhere but, was that the area around Microsoft was technology stupid. And in fact it is. Still is and will be until Microsoft starts following.

Think about the notion of a Google computer in space. Nanotechnology which might cook a terestrial system, in the infinate cold of space will obsolete a lot of technology especailly Web page and video search technology and voice recognition technology. The satelite would be linked to by the MacCaw technology now being rolled out everywhere but in Seattle. If you are working with the technology that is going to be replaced make certain you are getting well paid for your efforts because that work probably will not be career enhancing.
