Power vs. Speed
I seems to recall when Intel said they already had achieved 6 GHz in the lab, but because of power requirements they didn't want to pursue it. After all, people were buying notebooks which run on batteries. So they gave up speed for low power.
That was a bad decision; I'd rather have speed than portability, so now the entire state of the art has to suffer.
