"Had Intel developed their own x86-64 bit technology, it would
have forced AMD to convert to Intel because of market share. It
was a good thing for AMD that Intel legitimized it by copying it."

Huh?

Intel had no intention of developing an x86-64 bit technology.
They wanted to throw off the x86 architecture and force
developers to rewrite everything for Intel's proprietary 64-bit
tech. But the Athlon64 allowed developers to continue building
on the x86 platform, giving them an easier and more
manageable upgrade path.

Intel's the one that's lucky they copied x86-64. If they hadn't,
their Q1 numbers would be much, much worse, and the CFO and
CEO would be on their way out the door. Come to think of it,
that might have been preferable to keeping them on board.

It's never pretty to watch a monopoly die, but it is interesting.
