multicore? try multiprocessor
an onchip memory controller is not that important to a system that has a bunch of cores on one chip, just increasing the FSB datarate (wider, faster, whatever) will take care of your problems there. The situation that most requires onchip memory controllers is the use of multiple discrete processors. Intel's architecture just strings all processors in a system along on one bus to the memory controller and I/O, creating a very ugly bottleneck in this type of system (8GBps (1066MHz FSB, Intel's fastest) is great for one pentium, but it's rather anemic as the entire memory and I/O bandwitdth for four or eight Xeons) AMD uses separate memory for each processor, and the processors are linked to each other and to common I/O resources by HyperTransport links.
