Good points and history, but
Had Intel developed their own x86-64 bit technology, it would have forced AMD to convert to Intel because of market share. It was a good thing for AMD that Intel legitimized it by copying it.

As for Itanium failing, it?s not because no one drank the Kool-aid but the simple fact that it?s impossible for a new platform to succeed without the majority of developers agreeing to switch to the new platform. Since Itanium has no smooth migration path, it locked it self in to a tiny market segment. The truth of the matter is, the Itanium is a much cleaner and better architecture than x86-64 but it?s just impractical to use it for anything other than a large MS-SQL 2005 server deployment.
