You would be right, but....
"And will linux detect the little camera thingy and sync pictures/notes/email to other devices? nope."

1997 was nine years ago. Welcome to 2006. Hardware detection: HAL and d-bus. Syncing pictures/notes/email: Bluetooth already covered. The little camera thingy? Video4linux and some apps like camorama should do the trick just fine. Handwriting recognition? Already done by the EmperorLinux, Inc. guys, with FULL usability. The only challenge we might see is with GPS, but I think that suits Linux porters just fine, as they love a good challenge(unless there's already a GPS solution I'm not aware of ;)). The only crippling there might be is that maybe instead of remote-controlling a Windows machine, it'll do it on a Linux desktop.

Or here's an interim solution that should please both sides of the OS flame wars: a dual-boot Origami. While the port is being brought up to speed(MS didn't just build the Origami overnight, it took them longer than a year), you could still use the Windows side to do whatever the Linux port would supposedly be lacking in functionality. Once the port has reached full functionality, you have a device that leverages it's features on BOTH operating systems.

But if the Origami winds up like the Newton or OQO, we'll just have to wait for the next "uber-Tablet" to come to market happy
