On a certain level

...they do need to understand how it works. Most people may not know how an internal combustion engine or hydraulic brake system works, but they didn't just go out an buy a car, hop in, and start driving. They had to get a learner's permit, take lessons whether a family member did it or they paid a driving school, learn the rules of the road, and pass a couple of tests. So while they can't tell you how the engine works, they know how to start the car, shift gears, use turn signals, use the wipers, operate the radio/navigation system, etc. The average computer user doesn't understand much more than using a keyboard & mouse and where the power button is.
