RE: Need your PC fixed? Get ready to pay up
And they will and do. I live in a very "wealthy" part of central California so I can get away with $125.00 an hour. And in the land of $1-6M homes, it's a drop in the bucket for most of these people. But I also have a sliding scale for those that aren't very well off financially as well as cash strapped schools..

As much as I dislike Microsoft, I do make good money from them to say the least! So I tolerate them. But I also make good money from Linux as well. Sure I don't repair Linux no where near as often I do with Window, but there are custom apps that need to be created and trained as well as supported for them. Oh and for clarity a lot of my Linux installs are in SMB's although I do install it for private clients as well on occasion. It's a balance of PC hardware and software support. And now that I have some new Macs in the house to learn from I will soon be supporting them as well!

Bottom line, the business success of PC repair techs relies on several factors.

1. Location
2. Average income of citizens in said location
3. Competition
4. Reputation.

I started off slowly 3 years ago, just over a year ago my business exploded. Why? See #4. I have a good reputation because I never make promises that I know I can't keep and ones I do make I keep.

Anyhow, yes it's a booming business, as Loverock stated (I can't believe I agree with him for once! ]:)) people don't want to know how the PC works just like they don't care about how their car works. If the car breaks, they hire a mechanic, if the PC breaks they hire me.
