Users don't care
*You* and most technical people think it's worth the cost, but Joe Schmoe average user does not. Loverock is correct...the user just wants to do whatever task they sat down in front of the PC to accomplish and don't want to be bothered with anything 'under the hood'. The average user can't even be bothered to read the text of a pop-up message and just clicks on 'OK' with no idea of what they just did. There was a PC brand satisfaction survey that I saw several years ago when Packard Bell was still a player. Despite PB being ranked the lowest in quality/satisfaction, they had the highest percentage of users who said they'd buy one again. Why on earth would they buy a turd again? Because it's cheap. The time lost futzing around with problems is a 'soft' cost and they ignore it. I've been trying for years to talk my sister into getting off of AOL dial-up and moving to cable or DSL...won't do it because of the 'hard' monthly costs...never mind that she spends HOURS doing things online that she could do in a few minutes with broadband or has to drive her kids to the library to use the computers there for research. And she originally set out to be a programmer, switched to business and went into banking, and now does accounting and taxes.
