End of the road for AMD

It was a great couple of years for AMD. Competing with Intel's old Netburst architecture gave them a much needed kicker. Well, like all good things, it must now come to and end - the empire strikes back.

That new Bensley FSB and associated chipset will evidently fly past that now tired hypertransport (HT. No matter how much AMD hypes HT's high Mhz, serial bus, it is no match for the parallel FSB. At more than twice the data transfer bandwidth, the faster FSB bensley will crush anything HT will provide. This is true even when AMD finally catches up to Intel in support of DDR2.

The best thing AMD can do is to continue to hype HT's high Megahertz because everyone knows that Megahertz still sells. It's gonna be tough to explain why Intel's "slow" FSB runs over the "fast" HT in performance. At a 2-3X difference in Mhz clock speed, it is now AMD's turn to explain why they can't move data around as fast as Intel.
