The real problem with cell
is that it's made by IBM - they just never 'got' PCs. Sure, they made the original Intel-based PC that started the Wintel empire, but that was pure luck. If Compaq hadn't cloned it, the IBM PC clone market would never have existed.

The PowerPC was a great chip, but IBM just never delievered on their promises. The fact that the cell is such a great chip shows that IBM could have delievered great performance for Apple's PCs for years to come, but they didn't.

I think Apple switched to Intel purely because they saw a chip manufacturer that actually cares about OEMs. And they also have the option of AMD, who seem to care even more.

IBM's chips remind me of DEC's Alpha - a fantastic chip that should have captured a huge market share, but didn't. It ran x86 code faster in emulation than any x86 chip could run it natively. Native Alpha Windows apps ran even faster and Alpha boxes cost little more (if anything) than a comparable Intel box. They even had 64-bit PCs in 1995, years before Intel had anything like it.

But DEC are dead and Intel lives - go figure.
