The problem I had with DIY
The problem I ran into was the cost. It was going to cost me considerably more to put parts together than it was to buy an equivalent mass produced system, nearly $250. I ended up buying a Compaq system online because it provided the most 'bang for the buck' at the time. I have gone the DIY route several times in the past but it seems the expense of parts has really gone up in the past few years as opposed to that of completed systems. Do you have a different take on this or a good source of components?

Another strategy I use is picking up second hand systems and upgrading them as needed since 1-3 year old systems can be bought very cheaply at the right places. This is probably what I'll do when I add a Linux box to my home network later this year.
