Intel is getting rid of the Netburst 31-stage pipeline and they improve their FSB but can only get a 20% improvement over current AMD processors? This is too insignificant! And by the time the NGMA is out how much faster will the Opteron be?

What's wrong with Intel? First, thei ditched Itanium which is their ONLY connection with the FUTURE and now they just started promoting the x86 line of processors. There is clraerly a change in strategic goals here: apparently they were relying on Itanium-2 to move them to the "next millenium" and they were just bumping up the frequencies of their "condemned" processors, w/o any other serious change on their architectures. Now, they are following the "right" way and try to reduce power consumption/head dissipation for their old processors and are trying to make their microarchitectures more meaningful.

So how long do they believe that the x86 can last? They clearly need a modern ISA and not the dinosaurus of the x86 .....

In the meantime, Power5+ is lookign much much better.....
