Compared to what?
While I agree with some of your objections to the green laptops I have some disagreements as well.

Under "Cons" for the Negroponte laptop you have listed:

"The unit comes with only a 500MHz processor and 500MB of local storage (in the form of flash memory..."

How is this worse than a book, a piece of paper or a chalkboard, presuming any of those is available? Bill Gates wants to provide cell phones which have less speed and less storage and require a keyboard and a TV to be functional and will still require external power to operate/recharge. Neither one of you seem to have a functional concept of the operating environment where these machines will be used.

>>The units don't sport mainstream applications.<<

What mainstream applications are irreplaceable in order for these machines to serve as educational tools?

>>In addition, computers without hard drives have historically flopped because of slow performance.<<

While this is true on it's face the actual flop was due to relying on floppy drives. Flash RAM isn't as fast as regular RAM but is many times faster than hard drives. And RAM won't break if the unit is dropped.
