Negroponte machine will likely fail ...
It's a noble cause but the beneficiaries will be the suppliers of the chips, not the recipient.

Why? Because the other attempts to supply the underpriviledged with cheap technology has already proven to fail - the article even describes those!

The best way to provide technology is to use the same means that has worked and continues to work today - libraries. In this case, the 'library' would be technology/internt centers housing much more advanced systems connected to broadband technology like WiMax. In this way, users can have a good experience with good technology instead of throw away toys.

What makes Negroponte think that 3 times a charm? Giving away cheap, hand cranked boxes that are obsolete from the get-go is a waste of resources for an otehrwise good cause.
