AMD showed them up with chips that performed better.. even single core and 32 bit running... at slower clock speed...

Intel has even shown up AMD, as in the mobile market a 2GHz Pentium-M 760 can beat a 2.4GHz turion

this "clock speed" everyone refers to is frequency. Its how many waves pass a given point per second. So yes everything inside the chip is moving faster at a higher frequency, so the same exact chip design with a higher frequencey will get things done faster. But a better chip design might only need to use half the amount of actual waves passing that point to do the same job, which would mean if it was clocked the same 'clock speed' then it would get the job done in half the time.
