- Basically this requires someone to port a compiler, right?
- Once the specs are out and a compiler package is built and maintained that code can be poured on, or at least thats my take. That shouldn't be too hard to accomplish. Of course once that's accomplished Sun would have to supply device drivers, once again, not a huge chore. Sun must veiw this as a safer bet than Linux compatibility for Solaris. 1) It avoids having to keep up with an ever evolving Linux. 2) It avoids issues with GPL entanglement. 3) It avoids the potential for gold digging in terms of patent/copyright liability. After all, Sun is a very deep pocketed target for a SCO type attack. 4) It avoids providing a convenient bridge for loyal Solaris customers to transparently migrate to Linux. 5) One could surely posit more advantages, but those could start one thinking things that Sun might be thinking.
