Ummm, why?
If I understand it, the idea is Sun believes they need this to compete in the high end servers sold by IBM and HP with a Linux offering. A case of, "the competition has a flaming widget so we need one too"?

I seriously question if this is true and I question even more if the distro's will provide a version once it's done. So far I don't see anyone clamoring to do so. (Certainly not RedHat and they are the distro leader.)

I think Sun would be better off if they spend the time and resources making Solaris run/use applications and device drivers built on/for Linux. At that point Solaris and Open Solaris becomes the new 800 gorrila on the block. I know a lot of *nix guys and to a person they all say Solaris is simply the best *nix in existance. Couple this with the availablility of existing software and device drivers and they will JUMP on Solaris.

Not to ruffle feathers but Open Solaris is not restrictive as is Linux when it comes to licensing or the encumberance of the existing GPL. With the CDDL license a developer can use the code base, customize it, and NOT have to give it away. To a "for-profit" developer it's a win-win situation.

Of course to make this all work to their advantage Sun must manufacture great hardware and do it at a competitive price. Something they, as a hardware company, should be able to do...
