Sure it is
Intel may say that Itanium was for high end only and there may be a glint of truth to that. They wanted to keep 64 bit servers for the high end only. They also wanted to dominate 64 bit servers with Itanium. You don't spend billions of dollars on development and 9+ years to develop a niche only product. That is not sound business, regardless of what Intel is saying now. Even at Itanium prices, it would take way to long for any ROI if Itanium was a niche player (which it is). They would have been much more satisfied if AMD never released a 64 bit x86 solution.

With Opteron and now an Intel version of x86-64, 64 bit solutions have become a reality for many more users than ever before. This has radically changed the shape of the 64 bit landscape as x86-64 servers will dominate the volume of 64 bit servers and the previous Big Tin servers will be relegated to niche status. They don't completely go away, but they will not dominate the 64 bit landscape as before.

Keep in mind, clusters can do many of the same tasks that were once only capable of high end solutions. They can also do it at a much more reasonable TCO.

Therefore, my argument still stands. Itanium is effectively dead and it is unlikely it will ever go mainstream.
