The Itanium market segment was to have included the low-end 64 server market that AMD has addressed. Intel obviously feel threatened otherwise they'd not have backtracked in this way. At least they are smart enough to have put a bet each-way.

The key I think is in the comment "once there are a sufficient number...." which won't happen for mainstream apps if Windows 64 is the x86/64 architecture.

As for performance overall... are these new chip designs all RISC running CISC instruction sets in microcode anyway?? So once the codebase is moved from x86/32 to x86/64 then the CPU optimisations for raw 64 can be applied without killing the performance of 32bit apps... which is what makes Itanium struggle for acceptance now in the low end.
