- Gateway's real business...

Nothing new here... Gateway and all the other publically held computer companies like it are not in the computer business, they are in the stock price business. In that business, constant growth and the possibility of continued growth are all that count. Growth is what makes the number of shares and the price of each to rise. Gateway can't grow the way it needs to because there are no new markets for it to tap into. They have all matured.
The CEO knew he could not fake growth and left. Sad thing is that he still gets 720K plus undoubtadly millions in future bonuses from the cost cutting he set up to fake profitability. Monies saved from laying off Gateway's workers and cutting the benifits of those left will fund those bonuses.
