I worked for Gateway for 8 1/2 years, starting in 1995. Things were good back then, we had a good product, and I took pride in what I did. I worked tech support for Corporate Accounts in North Sioux City, and I enjoyed working for Gateway. The company had always turned a profit, and had never had to do any layoffs in it's history. Things started to change after a while, and the company started to go downhill. Layoffs, changes in leadership and vision, and a chain of command that kept getting longer, resulting in the people at the top, who used to be the ones on the phones selling, supporting, and building the systems, getting so out of touch that we needed heat-seeking bullcookie detectors to find their offices.
I transferred to Rio Rancho NM and helped get the call center up and running there. I left that facility to work in a Country Store back here in California. A few short months after the transfer, I found out that the center in NM was closed and everyone was laid off.
The news releases all showed that Gateway bought out eMachines, but if you look closer, it's a whole different story. eMachine's president took over Gateway, the executives from eMachines moved in, and Gateway's headquarters moved to eMachine's digs. Since when does a 'buyout' work this way?
I stayed at the Country Store until it closed in April 2004. Mr. 'I never needed no stores before and dadburned if I know what to do with em, let's close em and lay everybody off' Inouye made his money, and wrote what could be one of the last chapters in what used to be the story of a proud family company, then grabbed his golden parachute and bailed. I hope he gets idicted on something nasty. Like insider trading, or embezzlement, or mailing anthrax to veteran's widows.
I loved the company I joined. I really don't care for what it's become. - Posted by: Pentaras Posted on: 02/09/06 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
