Comparing Apples to Oranges
Comparing ownership or property to "squatting" on a patent are two entirely different things. You have to create a system that has a better balance of allowing individuals create technology rather then stiffling due to someone's "idea".

Patent logic and wording aside, the biggest problem in this whole case is that the claim that NTP is trying to put in is exhorbinant. If industry standard practices were used in this case, then RIM would have settled this case long ago.
