I am sick of these patent holding companies like NTP, Eolas, etc, etc who develop ideas - which is great - but then they do nothing with them. They exist only to simply sit by and wait for someone who can actually accomplish something do it for them, then they sue for patent infringement and ask for ridiculous amounts of money. It's sickening. The idea of patents is to protect the intellectual property of someone, and in the case of patenting ideas for technology, that is fine, but there needs to be stipulations that the company or individual needs to be actively working on developing the idea, or after a certain amount of time they need to lose those rights.

It's not like RIM was a big company before the Blackberry and they "stole" the idea from NTP (or the individual that sold them the patent). These guys started the company from humble beginnings in Waterloo, Ontario... building it on the backs of the best computer science and math majors in the world from University of Waterloo. This company did something with their noodles, they didn't sit on their butts and try to make profit from other's work.

I, in all honesty, hope they implement the work around and that NTP ends up with a big fat nothing... that's clearly what they deserve at this point.

Besides, those that argue against RIM fail to understand that ALL the Patent disputes have gone RIM's way - that says it all. And I don't believe there are many people who would argue that the US Patent system needs some SERIOUS overhauling for cases like NTP and Eolas to simply name 2.
