Money: Costs in the data center are primarily driven by space, HVAC, and admin. 8 cores in a 1RU space, powered at under 300W, administered as one rather than 8 to 4 boxes translates into substantial savings over the life of a box, vs. a bunch of Xeon systems. Apps: Sun's challenge will be to a) port or assist others in porting open source apps to the new platform to build a compelling market for b) convincing application providers that the risk is worth it.
