Sun wasted time and opportunity...
and has paid a heavy price. Now I believe they've got their act together and are doing some pretty smart things. It remains to be seen if they've missed the boat, but I think they have a pretty good shot at regaining much of what they lost fighting with Microsoft in the courts instead of concentrating on outperforming them in the network.

In the past year or so they've cut a deal with Microsoft and now offer much better interoperability which means companies no longer have to take an "either/or" approach to what they run in their installation. They've broadened their hardware offering with the acquisition of StorageTek and they've bought software companies that improve their flexibility in terms of connectivity and software support. Now they've gone open source and anyone can download and implement a big part of their software stack on sparc or x86 systems at no cost.

Given these things along with the introduction of the niagara servers that are price competitive with x86 machines and run faster and cheaper, I'm optimistic that they'll be able to remain superior technologically and will regain their competitive position economically and in the marketing arena.
