Sparcs higher cost is a myth
I run several two and four processor sparc systems in my installation and my experience has been that the cost of the x86 machines we've purchased in the last year or two are at least as expensive and often more expensive for a nominally equivalent system. When compared in actual performance the x86 machines become much more expensive if they're running windows because you have to buy a lot more machine to perform similar functions. The x86 servers running redhat in my environment get closer to the performance of the sparc systems but still lag somewhat.

Of course the redhat OS also turned out to be quite a bit more expensive because the company insisted on buying the redhat "support" license that we've never had or needed for the solaris on sparc machines.

Frankly, as an admin that has taken care of windows, linux and solaris machines running on sparc and x86 architecture, I welcome the idea that I'll be able to run linux on sparc if there is an application where that combination is preferable. In my experience the sparc architecture is the most robust and reliable on the market today. Who wouldn't want their preferred OS to run on such a platform?
