- VOIP and encryption
- I was talking to a friend about this idea awhile back. executives can talk to eachother over encrypted voip lines from computer to computer, no more tapping by fedeal agencies or by emplyees or by competitors. upside is securoty, downside is terrorism. But the government could not tap it anyways. the would need a source ip address. So say osama goes to his local internet cafe and makes a voip call. What is the cafes ip address ?What if osama is using a proxy server, so now in this cafe there are 20 users using voip? Which port is he outbound on ? What if the ports are natted ? I think the governments only solution to this is to only allow voip by registering a 128bit key with your local provider, much like a phone number, but you would need this key to unlock the voip ports to pass on the call to another caller. the governemnt would then just send a message to the main backbone routers and once the key is passed the router would copy the message to a local log which would get emailed and then unencrypted at the governments office. Please not this is not a RFP by any means, but this would be about the only solution. Just my sense, I guess my two cents are free.
