1920's
According to development history, it is now the 1920's for the computer. Maybe the Cell chip will see us to the Model T stage.
I doubt very much that you will see Cell blades in the ordinary data centre very soon. These beasties are initially targeted at high graphics and vector computation intense purposes, but if you want to see better throughput using ordinary off the shelf hardware, I do not doubt that an interconnected Cell of many Cell enabled servers will blow the pants off anything out there.
Once you start using a new technology like Cell that gives high end capabilities never offered before, then the need for blade interconnects may be the only way to go to deliver the extra amount of content.
Which is probably why IBM is doing it this way as they have had access to Cell for quite some time, and they, in this newly restarted developing industry, are not generally known for making computer processor based decisions that are not viable.
