Heat
I think there's a dated perception here. I remember reading an article comparing AMD chips with Intel chips with respect to heat. Might have been on Bob's hardware guide - don't recall. It was clear that the CPUs being reviewed at the time both generated lots of heat. Both needed big heatsinks and fans. The Intel chips, when the heatsink/fan was removed, slowed down, then stopped, owing to built-in overtemp protection circuitry. The AMD chip just burned to a crisp, and very quickly (a second or so) because it had no overtemp protection. I like AMD CPUs - I have about 3 machines with them, and they have their strengths, but at least with respect to heat control in that generation (Athlons around 1.4 GHz, I think), I have always been very careful to use BIG sinks/fans. A friend's 750 Duron was flaky until I put a bigger sink/fan on it than came from the factory and then it ran perfectly. The new sink dropped the temp about 20 degrees.

This is old info; I have no idea if recent changes at AMD have been made that circumvent the problem. But it is first-hand information based on my own experience at the time. AMD provides valuable competition to Intel that lowers costs through competition. I will always include them in my mix for that reason - they need to survive and prosper for our benefit as well as theirs.
