Flame on!
While re-installing is not a regular part of computer maintenance, it is sometimes required when patches or application upgrades installations step on each other through a company's negligence or stupidity or apathy. And occaisionally, when a PC is shut down in an uncontrolled fashion, files and the system registery gets fouled up, which may eventually require the re-installation of some software (or not - you may never use the part that got wacked!)

But mostly, it is supposed to be unusual to have to reformat disks or reinstall software. Case in point: I use several PC's running MS Windows for Workgroups 3.11, MS Windows 95, MS Windows 98, MS Windows 2000. The oldest has been in use since 1995 and has never had software re-installed - even with a sometimes flakey hard drive. Mostly because we have backups. But also because periodic disk checks verify the integrity of the media and the file system.

It amazes me that individuals like optimaloptimusprime are allowed to even use computers. But, I suppose we should expect these type of individuals to enter the computer realm once automotive technology progressed to the point where those who would normally be shade tree mechanics are no longer pulling their engines and transmissions half a dozen time a year. Thirty years ago I bet he would have pulled the heads off of his car engine to grind off the carbon at least twice a year.

Worse yet, I'll bet he's the manager of computer systems for some small company.
