Something for PowerPC fans
"IBM, meanwhile, will provide details on a Power5 server
chip that runs at speeds higher than 1.5GHz, and on a
2.5GHz PowerPC processor, a faster version of the chip
currently found in machines from Apple Computer."

IBM has jumped the G5 (new 970FX) processors clock rate
by 25% and appears on target to reach Steve Jobs promised
3GHz this year. This improvement is unmatched by other
chips manufacturers and is unlikely to be matched in the
near term.

The new 970FX's lower power consumption also open up
the possibility for its use in laptops at lower clock rates.

Apple's first computer using these chips will be the new
XServe, available this month. These units will be used to
replace the existing G5s at Virgin'a Tech, the world's 3rd
fastest supercomputer. The reduced size, heat dissipation
and power consumption will significantly reduce the
operating costs of their cluster.

From what was an impressive debut, the G5 continues to
improve very aggressively. A positive news story for Apple
supporters.
