RE: lots...
>$5000 for a laptop. That's way expensive. But, I guess stuffing a Peee4 Emergency Edition in that case adds to the cost.

It does, quite a bit. While I agree that the Dell is more expensive than I thought it would have been (would much rather get an Alienware or similar for that price,) the $5000+ mark is for a full decked out model.

>And you complain Apple is expensive - the top end Powerbook 17" tops out at $3000.

No, they don't. You can easily get a 17" Powerbook near the $5000 mark. Just bumping the RAM up to 2GB (like the 5000+ Dell does) jacks the 17" PB over 4 grand. The 15.4" PB with the same 2GB is 3800.

To be fair, as much I like Macs, the AlBooks do not compete on a performance level anywhere near what this new Dell should be cranking out. A 1.25GHz G4 will not touch a 3.4GHz P4 (Extreme Edition or otherwise.) The 1.25 G4 can likely keep up with P4s running up to around 2GHz, but there's no way it's going to go head-to-head with a 3.4. When the G5 versions come out (hopefully by summer?) the PBs will be a lot stronger in this sort of contest, but until then it's really not a realistic comparison.
