Probably part of the original agreement
I have a feeling that VT and Apple worked out an original
purchase agreement that included the switch when the new
equipment was available, and wouldn't be surprised if it is a no-
cost switch for VT.

The simple fact is that no one (including Dell) could match the
price/performance demands - that is why VT went with the G5.
The Dells were just too slow and cost too much. Gee, where
have I heard that before . . .

Now Apple has a major super computer site that can provide
information and guidance for others who want/need a major
super computer. If I was Apple I would ensure that VT always
had the fastest, most up to date hardware available. For VT it
can also mean some very nice revenues from consulting on
building a top 5 super computer. Not a waste of money from
what I can tell.
