re: Have you seen VT?
Can't say that I have so I can't comment on the space considerations. (I have seen the cool movie of the space at apple.com, though.)

I'm sure that there are considerations that we are unaware of. I can only guess that the Xserve, as a dedicated rack server device, has certain advantages over the tower. Well, mainly the ease of adding extra hard drives springs to mind as do fault tolerances and stuff like that.

As for the expense, I am guessing that Apple gave them a VERY good deal on the tower G5's and will do the same with the Xserves. The refurbished G5's that are being sold aren't that cheap, either, so VT may be doing just fine reselling them. Apple took them back, refurbished them and is now reselling them. While I doubt that Apple did an even swap between the towers and Xserves, I can't imagine them hosing VT considering all the positive press Big Mac has generated.

I think the bigger issue is the time to take the Big Mac apart and rebuild it using the new Xserves...

And the bigger picture is that VT has not only shown that a supercomputer can be built on the cheap with off the shelf computers but that it can be rebuilt as well. Try that with any other supercomputer on that top 10 list.
