This isn't about just building the thing to build it. They used the best components at the time for the best price they could find. This happened to be the tower G5. Now, the slimmer G5 Xserve is available. Switching to these smaller computers will free up floor and rack space and be more efficient in the long run.

And how is this gratuitious? They are going to actually USE the supercomputer for more than just establishing benchmarks. These machines can be used to create all sorts of models such as weather, nuclear explosions, genetic research and so on. Who knows what kind of breakthrough this machine will produce.

Now that this is being built with the Xserve, I would expect it to be around for quite some time.
