X86 growing old
A lot of mistakes were made when developing the Itanium, notably the half-baked (maybe quarter-baked) support for x86. Now that it's being removed from the chip I hope that in combination with their re-promotion of the chip that it will succeed.

X86 chips were great, but they are showing their age horribly - almost 27 years now. The Itanium chip blends some of the best of the older ideas (Alpha) and some new ideas together making on great architecture. Intel blew it the first time around, but hopefully they can salvage their mistake. I shudder at the idea of being stuck with X86 chips for another 27 years; at some point you just have to call it quits.
