You guys are all wrong
but it will take 10 years to prove it! The EPIC architecture of Itanium is right where everyone will HAVE to go once Moore's Law fizzles out. It all makes sense - minimize specialized functions in hardware, thereby giving more room for "general" processing (more registers, ALUs). If AMD had come out with this, it would be flying high today!

It was (surprise, surprise) InHell's missteps that hurt the Itanium. INSISTING on shoehorning a never-tried x86 "half"-core on the chip (that never worked), was like scribbling on the Mona Lisa with a Sharpie i.e. they just don't go together. This action delayed the chip and caused infighting between the people that knew what they were doing (the HP team made up of Alpha designers), and the ones that had the money (dufus InHell engineers) - which caused MORE delay, and then HP gave up and gave in to InHell - which caused MORE delay.

This is a great chip made mediocre by a poor company.
