RE: "Opteron? Intel can't face the music?"
The irony here, especially with HP, is that HP uses Operton chips on some of their servers and blade. But yet, they want to pour all this money in the the Co-developed Itanium. I guess they think they are going to recoup their losses in that chip but adding more money to the problem.

Personally speaking, i think what they should do with the Itanium is strip away the best features and add those abilities to the Xeon line of chips to make better xeon's that could have better performance while mainting the lower price.

""Opteron? Intel can't face the music?
This smacks of denial. Why throw good money after bad when your competitor just thrashed you head on. Cut your losses and proceed with the needed change of direction.

Why does this article repeatedly mention anything but AMD's enormous success in the server market with the Opteron chip?

I'll explain both of the above for you: Intel is still in denial, as incredible as that is.

1) Market share
"Itanium has been taking share from both IBM power and Sun Sparc. We're on the right trajectory, but we want to go faster," Tom Kilroy, general manager of Intel's Digital Enterprise Group, said at a press event here.
Maybe...but who has been outstripping all of these in market share?
