- Intel MISSED the boat with IA64 but now is chasing

after AMD. It is just too bad that Intel failed to provide a smooth upgrade path from their IA32 to their much better IA64. But what were they thinking when they did not provide the tools and support for their customers to transition to IA64?
Just wait until we clean up our compiers, recompile and rebuild your s/w and just buy the very expensive itanium-2's (whose performance until 3 1/2 years ago was sucky) and you are ... done!
AMD in order to survive had to beat Intel in its own x86 game and it did this. They produced a decent 64-bit version of the the infamous IA32 which is a great success.
Intel after soiling its pants with AMD's Opterons' and Hypertransport's success, THEN started immitating AMD and then made the big backwards step to 64-bitify their awkward xeons and pentiums.
Too bad that people still remain stuck with the x86 dynosaurs.....
Why Intel, why ?....
