More interesting from the pouint of view of server consolidation
30-odd Enterprise series and HP-UX boxes sounds like a bit of a hairball. Consolodation onto two Z-series mainframes makes a lot of sense. When Matahorn group did this a few years ago, they achieved a twentyfold imrovement in both power consumption and floorspace usage. The ability for large array machines to emulate huge clusters will be a big factor in their uptake in years to come - especially in sectors that do not tend to replace hardware frequently. The Z-series machines already have IRM, to run virtual clusters that use a fraction of the number of CPUs needed to run the real cluster, as well as bipolar logic processing and other factors to reduce operating temperatures and radically reduce form factors.

Oh yeah, and there's some Linux in the story, too, so that "Souther Pride" can post something insulting and low-brow that makes him feel like he has an opinion. Mostly, however, I see this as being about the fight between superclusters and virtual clusters, in meeting the need for big number crunching. With computing capacity now rapidly outsripping demand, and the capabilities of virtual clusters rising all the time, the use of mainframes in place of real clusters will begin to look more and more compelling in terms of TCO, since the prchase price of two Z-series isn't actually all that higher than the replaxcement cost of 30-odd Sun Enterprise systems, say, while the power consumption will be a more and more significant factor (especially if we have any more power outages like we did last year).
