Interesting times
the good news is that more recent 64 architectures (AMD
and Intel) are increasingly being used with Linux and UNIX.
Not by ms windwoes....

HP is VERY WISE to start disengaging its FUTURE from the
single processor family of Itanium. And it is wise to extend
its PA RISC processor line. Unfoirtunately, Intel seems to be
decommiting itself from Itanium as well. All the while
opteron looks better and better....

Another interesting development is the emergence of high
performance standards, such as, hypertansport, FC, 10GB
Ethernet, IPv6, etc. One thing is for sure: desktops and
servers will be really different after 5 years from what they
are today.

Obviously (to me) Linux will dominate in the middle-tier
server, UNIX in the high-end servers (data and scientific)
and AMD will fill the gap of the 64-bit middle size SMPs.
How clustering and SMPs will play out is still to be seen.

interesting times....
