My linux laptop has a 12GB drive, with about 6GB free. That's including all my user files. The operating system itself and programs (including OpenOffice.org2, FireFox, Thunderbird, gaim, xmms, and develpoment system (compilers, headers, etc.) probably take up less than 3GB.

FWIW, my first laptop -- an Epson PX-8 back in the early 80s -- was fully solid state. It could literally run for days on a single charge. The OS (CP/M) and applications (WordStar, Portable Calc, utilites, etc.) were all on ROM chips. CMOS RAM was used for data storage.
