The demand exists for a variety of chips.

Do you think Apple gave up the advantages of the G5 desktops
for plain vanilla Pentium 4s? No, it's the Pentium M/whatever
they decide to call it chip to run the iBook, Mac mini and
Powerbook lines as well as other small devices that Apple hasn't
been able to build yet because the RIGHT processor has not
been made available to them yet. The thing many Wintel users
have yet to get over because it was sold to them for so long is
the megahertz myth. It all started with the massive overclocking
of chips to make 1 ghz. After that chips were designed to
increase the number of clock cycles at the expense of other
advantages in efficiency. Power consumption of these hot chips
made them not particularly useful for laptop or portable devices.
So Intel and others built more efficient, lower clock cycle, low
power chips that perform well but don't build up heat. These will
be the best selling chips over the next few years because laptops
are replacing many desktops and over 50% of the market is
portable computers and a huge growing market is more specific
use personal computing or entertainment devices that need low
power processors. Unlike other companies, Intel offers the low
power processors for portable devices, regular low priced
desktop processors, and low to middle end server and high end
desktop processors. For the less than tech savy customer I have
the following advice. You get what you pay for.
