It's cumulative
Something like the Patriot Act (that name just really irks me) aside, but big invasions of privacy don't drop out of the sky like a meteor. It's this little thing and that little thing, by themselves meaningless, but when some clever programmer figures out how to string them together it becomes something. Maybe Tivo is being careful with the data today, but what little thing are they going to start doing next? And the one after that? And when they get bought out some day and a new company takes over, then what?

The older I get the more I want the government to leave me alone and the more excuses they seem to find for wanting to intrude.

I want my privacy back, I want my country back, and I want to be in control of my own data. That data is worth a lot of money and it should belong to me.
